Gregorio Marangoni is a tattoo artist based in São Paulo, Brazil. Working only in black tattoo ink, Marangoni creates tattoos that have intricate details and lots of texture. To create the textures and details, Marangoni uses a combination of line work and dot work, using smooth lines to create and then shading and texturing the outlined shapes with hundreds of tiny dots. This tattoo design style is becoming more and more popular because it has the boldness of traditional tattoos while being an entirely modern style. In fine art, creating a painting out of thousands of tiny dots is called Pointillism.

Marangoni’s attractive tattoos often have symbolic or totem animals in them as subjects. Deer, birds, beetles and big cats all find a symbolic place in Marangoni’s tattoo art. Another design element that often appears in Gregorio Marangoni’s tattoo designs is an optical illusion; geometric shapes and patterns that can be seen in more than one way. One of his favorite techniques is to create an area filled with cubes that seem to either have a small block cut out of each cube or alternatively, a small block resting in the corner where the cube join. Marangoni adds a spiritual essence to his tattoo art by using mandala designs. Sometime the mandala is used as part of another subject in the tattoo, and sometimes smaller subjects such as beetles are used to create the mandala design. Combining animals and mandalas in a dot work style can also be seen in the tattoo art of David Hale here and here.
