The skin is literally being stabbed thousands of times in order to deliver the ink under the dermis. When slowed down, we can see how difficult the canvas of skin is to work with, as it moves about in response to the motion of the tattoo machine. To put it in perspective, an artist might as well try to paint a curtain by repeatedly poking it with the tip of a paintbrush. Tough job. Kudos to all those tattoo artists out there. These tiny needles barely enter the skin, delivering their ink load into the epidermis, the top layers of skin. Too deep and the client bleeds, too shallow and the resulting tattoo will look patchy and unfinished.
