Chickens are a domesticated bird that some people view only as a source of eggs and meat. Others like the personalities of these noisy, often colourful animals and engage with media and art that feature the chicken. Some people are even choosing to keep them as pets because these adventurous and lively animals are quite entertaining and have little fear of people when raised among us.

And then there are those who choose to have these tasty birds inked into their skin for life as chicken tattoos. They walk among us…

Chickens as Art

Chickens have appeared in art works for centuries, even as far back as 2000 years ago, when the Romans celebrated their hens and roosters in mosaics and mural art. Chickens have appeared in art across the globe, from paintings and tapestries to ceramics and animation. Humanity’s love for this characterful bird means that many plucky people (I was surprised and tickled by just how many chicken tattoos there are) have chosen to get chickens and roosters tattooed into their skin; inking themselves for life with designs of this fun bird.

All of this chicken art has served as inspiration for tattoo artists to create chicken tattoo designs that are based on other art forms:

"Talented

Talented tattoo artist Fernanda Ramirez has inked this embroidered tattoo of a colourful chicken on her happy client. The tattooist has realistically depicted the individual threads of the embroidered design by using lighter and darker inks to create highlights and shadows, giving the tattoo textures and depth. The style of the design is reminiscent of traditional Hungarian embroidery. [source]

"Italian

Italian tattoo artist Michele Volpi has tattooed her happy client with this science textbook tattoo design of a chicken, newborn chick and a hen’s egg. Science diagrams make cool tattoo designs because they are created with the intention of being both realistic and simplistic – easy for the eye to understand. [source]

"This

This fun chicken tattoo features Feathers McGraw, the sinister but lovable chicken character from the animated film franchise Wallace and Gromit. The tattoo artist has chosen to create a cartoon style design of this cheeky chicken but it still retains the soft quality of the clay that Feathers McGraw is made out of in the stop motion movies. [source]

Hey Hey! It’s Heihei!

Heihei is a comical chicken character from Disney’s 3D animated movie, Moana. Heihei is the village idiot and accidentally joins Moana’s adventures, providing a lot of humor for this kids’ film. This colourful chicken features big, bulging eyes and brightly colored feathers that are generally scruffy-looking. Disney’s really good at combining lovability and idiocy in their cartoon characters and Heihei the chicken is no exception.

"This

This funny and colorful chicken tattoo features Heihei the rooster from Disneys 3D animated film Moana. The tattoo artist has used splashy watercolor effects to color the this chicken tattoo design, giving the final tattoo an artistic but still cartoonish style. [source]

"Florida

Florida based tattoo artist Cassandra has inked this striking tattoo design of Heihei the Chicken from Moana, giving this loco rooster a mad and funny appeal by adding in motion lines around this quirky bird. [source]

"Tattoo

Tattoo artist Brent Goudie has given this cartoonish tattoo design of Heihei the rooster from Moana a sticker effect by outlining the design with white tattoo ink, like the border of a sticker. Even though the white ink will fade in intensity; it will still help to make this Heihei tattoo really pop. [source]

Seriously Chicken

The following tattoos have used more serious styles of design to give power to the chickens and roosters featured in the tattoos. Roosters can be quite vicious when protecting their flock of hens. The rooster is armed with a spur, which is basically a big, sharp talon on the back of their legs. When they attack, they raise their legs and use their claws and spurs to rake an opponent. Hens are less fearsome when fighting, but can still cause a lot of pain with their beaks and claws. The term “hen-pecked” refers to a hen that has been bullied by other hens who peck at her. In human relationships, the term is used to refer to someone who has been bullied by others, usually women.

These chicken and rooster tattoos take the more dangerous, and sometimes darker aspects of chickens’ personalities into account by reflecting these more serious attitudes with serious design styles:

"Tattoo

Tattoo artist Sal Tino has used a fantasy illustration style give this rooster tattoo a beautiful, dark mystique. The black ink rooster figure poses against a magical orb in the background, which the artist has chosen to colour with a vibrant and alarming shade of red tattoo ink. The tattooist has used tiny dots of ink to give the shaded areas texture as added visual appeal. [source]

"This

This timeless illustration style tattoo of a rooster and his hen is by tattoo artist Donna Phillips. The illustrative style is of the type that might have been used in picture books from the early twentieth century, and reflects the traditional nature of the relationship between a rooster and his hen. A connection is implied between the birds’ relationship and the traditional relationship between a human husband and his wife, adding a layer of symbolism to the design. The artist has cleverly placed the tattoos on her client’s calves, giving each bird their own, matching canvas. [source]

"Tattoo

Tattoo artist Jukan gives this tattoo of an old man and his hen emotional depth by using jagged linework and a sketchy, artistic style that hints that there’s a long and storied history between the man and his bird. The tattoo designer has added abstract elements such as irritating, scratchy lines around the old man’s right eye to add to the annoyed and stern expression of the figure. I’ve feature Jukan before on RattaTattoo in Jukan Tattoos Abstract Watercolor Awesomeness [source]

"This

This exquisite tattoo of a rooster is by Chinese tattoo artist Chen Jie, who has used a traditional Chinese ink illustration style. The tattoo beautifully mimics the painted brushstrokes used in the original ink design. The artist has also skilfully copied the subtle nature of watered-down ink. [source]

Void Chickens and Minecraft Hens

Void Chickens:

Void chickens exist in the pixellated game world of Stardew Valley, a farming game in which a player grows crops and raises livestock and then produces products to sell in the game. Tattoos based on game elements from Stardew Valley feature solid blocks (pixels) of saturated color inks.

Minecraft Hens:

Minecraft hens are blocky chickens that live in the 3D game world of Minecraft. They spawn naturally and players can build fences around them to farm them for food. The blocky nature of Minecraft’s interface give Minecraft hens a wide beak, resembling the flat bill of a duck rather than a pointy, tapering beak of a chicken. This just adds to the humorous appeal of the design, though. Because Minecraft hens are 3D, tattoo artists include shadows to give the illusion of three-dimensionality.
