The Art of Abstract Tattoos

The term “abstract tattoo” is a fairly new term that has sprung up over the last few decades. Abstract tattoos are any tattoo design that doesn’t accurately reflect reality, but instead tries to recreate reality through the use of attractive lines and shapes. By this definition, a tattoo of a heart symbol is essentially an abstract tattoo design. Because so many tattoo designs would then essentially be “abstract” designs, the term is now used to refer to tattoos that bear similarities to paintings from the abstract art movement of the early 20th century.

Some of Peter Aurisch’s tattoos have cubist influences. Cubism was an abstract art movement that began in the early 20th century. Cubist artists would view a scene and then compose an abstract image of the scene with sharp edges and straight lines, recreating the scene out of “cubes”. One of the most famous and recognizable cubist artists is Pablo Picasso, whose nude portraits in a cubist style still intrigue people a century after their creation.

The bear is a symbol of strength, trust and courage and is featured in dozens of tales from cultures around the world. [source]

Tattoo Art to Rival that of Fine Art Masters

Peter Aurisch’s tattoos use a fine art style known as abstract art. The way in which he practices the art of tattooing resembles the dedication of fine art masters. All great artists spend the majority of their time honing their skills, practicing and experimenting. The quest for perfection is never completed, and this dedication to creating excellence is apparent in Aurisch’s body art.

Although it may seem that at an artist can get away with a few mistakes in this sketchy art style, it is a style that is very difficult to tattoo into human skin and therefore a steady, practiced hand is required. Each tattoo is designed specifically for the client, based on the client’s wishes. Peter Aurisch will spend several hours with a client discussing the composition of a design, the placement of the tattoo and the symbolism used within the design. While some artists refuse to tattoo certain designs, such as fairies or certain flowers, Peter Aurisch instead finds new ways to approach over-used symbols and give them a fresh appeal.

While many tattoo artist might grow bored with tattooing flowers, Aurisch simply gives the design a new twist, keeping himself interested in the subject matter. Many tattoo artists claim to be proficient in either black ink tattoos or color ink tattoos, but few tattoo artists can honestly claim to merge the two as cleanly as Peter Aurisch. His tattoo designs often combine large areas of exquisite black ink work with areas of color ink work, creating a balance between gray scale and color that is seldom seen in contemporary tattoos.

Peter Aurisch owns a tattoo parlor called Nevada Johnny in Berlin, Germany and can be reached through his website. This artist is often booked up for several months at a time, which means you have loads of time to do research and think about the symbolism you’d like to include in your Peter Aurisch abstract tattoo.
